Short Bio

A reimerging artdsist working in oil and acrylic paints on canvas, realistic expresionist and abstract works

Statement

My art fills an inherent need to tell the viewer a story. I am happy to watch the conversation from a distance and witness the view from the subjects’ eyes.

I often turn to bold colors and whimsical subjects to grab the viewer’s attention and engage their imagination. When selecting a subject to paint in my realism, it must always have some dramatic element of color, light and shadow, or whimsy in its composition. I believe that in the battle for eyeballs, the clever creative wins every time.

Biography

Although Thomas Gaebel has been working diligently behind the scenes for the art community since the late 1980's, he's been away from the craft of creating art for the past 35 years, only re-emerging onto the scene as an artist since the pandemic.

Gaebel graduated with a BFA in fine art and graphic design in 1989, and since establishing his studio in the heart of Sonoma County California in 2021, he's only just begun exploring his craft and his new artists’ community.

As a re-emerging artist, Gaebel is taking the time to rediscover his relationship with color, perspective, composition, and the temperamental qualities of acrylic and oil paints.

Gaebel's return to fine art and expression — specifically painting — has always been imminent, but to his surprise the actual reunion has been a joyful and profoundly validating one.

Gaebel's latest big break came with the acceptance of his painting Raincoat in the 2023 de Young Open in San Francisco. which was met by some validating local acclaim.

With over 8,000 submissions, only 883 pieces we’re accepted into this auspicious showcase. This exhibition has helped Gaebel launch his work into the modern art scene, and he couldn’t be more excited.
